*A Short Hike is a game the whole family can love. It’s an homage to classics while still very much it’s own release. There is much to explore, fun characters to interact with, and the entirety of the title just had me smiling. Carve out a couple of hours in your day, curl up with some ‘Strawberries and Toast,’ and give A Short Hike a play.
A Short Hike is an indieadventure video game developed and published by Canadian programmer Adam Robinson-Yu (also known as adamgryu), who created the game in three months while on break from another project. It is an open world exploration game in which the player is tasked with reaching the summit of a mountain to get cellphone reception. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux in July 2019, and for Nintendo Switch in August 2020.
A Short Hike received positive reviews from critics, who widely praised its relaxing gameplay, freedom of exploration, and flying mechanics, while some criticized the short length and the handling of some story elements.

Eligible for up to points Hike, climb, and soar through the peaceful mountainside landscapes of Hawk Peak Provincial Park.Gameplay[edit]The player character, Claire, can glide over any area of the park.
The player has the ability to jog, climb, swim, and glide through an open-world park while controlling Claire, an anthropomorphic bird.[1] To reach the peak, the player must find or purchase golden feathers that afford extra jumps and the ability to climb rock faces.[2] According to a sign on Hawk Peak Trail, the peak can be reached with as few as seven golden feathers. Once the player reaches the peak, they are free to explore the park and complete side activities as they please.[3]
In addition to the main goal, the island is populated with other animals, who offer side-quests and activities including fishing, finding lost items, and playing a volleyball-like mini-game called ’beachstickball’. Rewards for these activities include items which improve the player’s ability to explore the park, such as running shoes or a compass. The player can also collect shells, sticks, coins, and other items to help complete these side-quests.
The game has an adaptive soundtrack that changes based on world events such as the weather, or player actions such as flying.[1] It also features a dynamic camera created with the Unity tool, Cinemachine.[4]Plot[edit]The player can interact with other animals in the park to complete side activities such as ’beachstickball.’
The protagonist and player character is Claire, a young bird who spends her days off by traveling to Hawk Peak Provincial Park, where her Aunt May works as a ranger.[5][6]
In an opening cutscene, Claire’s mother drives her to a ferry that will take her to the park for the summer. When Claire arrives, her Aunt informs her that there’s no cellphone reception in the park except for at Hawk Peak. Claire has never hiked the Hawk Peak Trail before, but is expecting an important call, so she decides to go to the summit.[1] It is then up to the player whether Claire helps the other animals on the island or heads straight for Hawk Peak. A sign at the mountain’s base warns it is a strenuous hike, and other characters will remark that the trail is too difficult for them.
When Claire reaches the peak, she congratulates herself for making it and sits in view of an aurora. Soon her cell phone rings, revealing the caller is her mother. She acknowledges that she had a surgery after sending Claire away. Claire is upset she wasn’t there for her, but Claire’s mother says she is proud of Claire for climbing Hawk Peak. The call is interrupted when an updraft emerges from the mountain. It makes Claire nervous, but her mother urges her to ride it before it disappears. Claire rides the updraft, soaring over the park.
Claire can then return to her Aunt, whereupon she explains to her all of the side activities she did on her hike.Development[edit]
In December 2018, Robinson-Yu took a break from developing his Untitled Paper RPG and started work on A Short Hike. Playing the games The Haunted Island, a Frog Detective Game and Minit convinced him that short games can be successful, too.[7] He later shared a prototype of A Short Hike on Twitter.[8] Rendering the game’s world using ’big crunchy pixels’ and simple models allowed Robinson-Yu to expand the scope of the game in spite of his limited art skills. The color palette for the game is sampled directly from photos of the Canadian Shield in autumn.[9]
After receiving funding via the Humble Original program, Robinson-Yu committed to finishing the game in three months. He tracked his progress using a simplified version of the scrum framework, and used existing Unity tools such as InControl and Cinemachine, as well as assets from previous projects.[10] He also prioritized adding content over fixing small bugs.[11]Release[edit]
The game was first released for subscribers of the Humble Monthly program on April 5, 2019, and later as a standalone game for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux on July 30, 2019. A version for Nintendo Switch was released on August 18, 2020.[6]Reception[edit]ReceptionAggregate scoreAggregatorScoreMetacriticPC: 80/100[12]Switch: 88/100[13]Review scoresPublicationScoreAdventure Gamers4.5/5[1]Destructoid7.5/10[14]GameSpot9/10[15]Nintendo Life10/10[16]GameCentral8/10[17]
A Short Hike received ’generally favorable reviews’ according to the review aggregator website Metacritic, receiving aggregate scores of 80/100 for the PC version,[12] and 88/100 for the Switch version.[13] Reviewers praised the peacefulness and replay value of the setting, as well as the open-ended gameplay, with several critics comparing the game’s open world to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.[5][3][16][17]
Reviewing the game for Nintendo Life, Stuart Gipp awarded A Short Hike a 10/10, calling it ’a truly complete game’ and ’a milestone in indie games’ for its freedom of gameplay and what he felt was ’a fat-free experience.’[16] Cathlyn Vania of Adventure Gamers rated the game 4.5/5 stars, calling it a ’relaxing adventure filled with not only humor but the tenderness of personal connections.’[1] Matthew Reynolds of Eurogamer named A Short Hike one of his Games of the Year, stating that the density of the island resulted in ’an adventure far richer than games many times of [sic] its length’.[2] Khee Hoon Chan of GameSpot similarly praised the game for its controls, free-roaming gameplay, and overall ’comforting, even pastoral allure,’ awarding it a 9/10.[15]
Kevin Mersereau of Destructoid was slightly more mixed, but overall positive, rating the game a 7.5/10. He called it a ’palette[sic]-cleanser’ that is ’relaxed’ and ’unique’, albeit ’far from perfect,’ praising the game’s flying mechanics, but criticizing its short length and ’anvil-dropped’ plot elements.[14]GameCentral’s review similarly critiqued the game’s length and the reveal of who Claire’s phone call is from, but awarded the game an 8/10, calling it ’utterly charming and perfectly paced.’[17]Washington Post critic, Christopher Byrd, described the game as ’built to foster a spirit of comfort rather than risk,’ criticizing the easiness of player tasks while still recommending the game as ’an achievement.’[5]Awards[edit]YearAwardCategoryResultRef20192019 Golden Joystick AwardsBest Indie GameNominated[18]202023rd Annual D.I.C.E. Though finding them is easy at first, finding the last few can be a bit of a struggle. Below I list all gold and silver feather locations.Note: All cardinal directions are given based off the map and the in-game compass which can be obtained by the wolf on the south end of the map.Map of LocationsGoat ranger at Visitor CenterThe goat ranger at the Visitor Center sells two gold feathers for 40 coins each.Mound Northwest of Visitor CenterThere’s a mound northwest of the visitor center. To get up there easily you need one feather but there are ways to reach it with no feathers.Stone TowerIn practically the middle of the western portion of the map, near Royal Ridge, is a stone tower. On top of the tower is a chest holding a golden feather.BeachstickballOn the northwestern-most part of the island there is a court where you can play a young bird in a game of beachstickball. Although the game has multiple rewards, the first, awarded after you and your partner hit the ball 10 times, is a gold feather.A Short Hike FeathersLedge above GraveyardBy far one of the more difficult feathers to find unless you’ve soared around the island a few times. On a cliff above the graveyard is a chest and in that chest is a feather. The graveyard is on the northwestern-most part of the island near the Beachstickball court. To find where to climb the wall, look for Avery or the tree with the ribbon tied around it. The chest is directly up from there.Cliff North of Meteor LakeNorth of the lake, way up on the cliff side is a small outcrop where you can find a feather freely floating. There’s a flower on the way there to make things a bit easier. In Her ShadowIn Her Shadow is the only treasure map quest that results in a golden feather (though the others give a bunch of money). You don’t need the treasure map, but if you want it it can be found at the boat on the east side of the island. If you have the shovel and don’t care for riddle solving, the chest can be dug up north of the lighthouse at the end of its shadow. On Top of LighthouseOn top of the lighthouse there’s a balcony with a chest on it. Inside is a feather.Hidden in ForestThere’s a dense forest southwest of the lighthouse. Within you will find a gold feather on top of a rock.Cliff below Outlook PointOn a cliff west-southwest of Outlook Point nestled on an outcrop above the trail.Outlook PointAt Outlook Point, near the scenic platform is a chest with a gold feather.Tough BirdThere’s a large cliff face preventing the player from ascending higher up the mountain (at least without feathers or the bucket). At it’s base it a tough bird reselling four gold feathers bought from the Visitor Center for 100 coins each. Right by them is a gold feather sitting on top of a rock.Seashell NecklaceWalking around the south beach of the map you can meet a young bird who demands you get her 15 seashells.Scattered around the island are pink, sparkly objects which are the shells needed for the quest. They are mostly found on beaches, sandy areas, or near rivers. When you return the shells to the bird she makes a shell necklace and tasks you to give it to Ranger May who is outside of the cabin you start in.As a sort of reward (though it’s framed as a coincidence), May gives you a gold feather.Frog Building Sand CastlesAt a small bay on the south side of the island is a frog building sand castles. He’s the one who gives you a shovel in exchange for a toy shovel. There are numerous toy shovels scattered over the island. Once you exchange the toy shovel for a real shovel, the frog will start building more sandcastles. In order for ’time to pass’ allowing him to build more, you have to leave the area and come back.Wandering ArtistThe wandering artist is a raccoon that can be first encountered in the southwestern-most portion of the map. When you speak with him, he finishes by saying he’ll move somewhere else to paint though it can be a bit cryptic. After speaking to him at each location, he’ll eventually give you a golden feather.Location #1 (Southwestern Peninsula)Down to the southwestern-most portion of the island is the first place you find the artist. You’ll know you’re around the right area if you see a brown dog running around. Speaking to him and leaving the area will move him to the next location.Location #2 (Lighthouse)The Lighthouse is pretty hard to miss and the artist is just west of it. If you’re having trouble, the lighthouse is also directly above Aunt May’s cabin.Location #3 (River’s Source)One of the more obscure locations, but there are only a few rivers so shouldn’t be too hard to locate it. If you know where the tough bird that is selling feathers and complaining about tuition is, walking off to the left of him will lead you to the raccoon.Location #4 (Graveyard)On a non-descript clidd overlooking the graveyard. If it’s raining you’re in the right area.Location #5 (Outlook Point)Outlook Point is just below where the climb up the mountain gets cold enough to freeze your feathers. The artist will be right by the lookout telescope.Location #6 (Visitor’s Center)Mysterious IslandThere is a silver feather located on a mystery island just off the main island. To find it, you talk to the crocodile walking around Sid’s Beach on the south end of the map. They point you toward Outlook Point where you can peer through a set of binoculars. Moving the view to the right, you can see an island off in the haze. The island also has a tall peak and once you go there and climb to the very top, you’ll find a silver feather.A Goat’s Watch and Tough Bird’s TuitionThe quest can be a bit sneaky if you don’t pay attention to dialog. In the center portion of the southern part of the map is a camper site where you can meet a goat. The goat tells you their painful story of how their watch has gone missing and they hope someone ’doesn’t sell it on the Internet.’If you talk to the tough bird selling feathers, you’ll find that he’s selling them to pay off his tuition which, even after you buy his feathers, will cost 400 coins. There’s many ways to earn coins around the mountain. You can dig up treasure, find chests, or sell fish. Once you get enough coins you can return to him and give him the money to pay off his tuition. As a reward, he gives you a watch eh was going to sell on the Internet.Watch in hand, you can return to the goat who gives you a silver feather in exchange.
